Strategic Leadership Programme: Cohort One is under way

The ETF is delighted to announce the successful start of its new Strategic Leadership Programme in partnership with the University of Oxford’s Saïd Business School.

The first three day residential at Oxford in June saw the first cohort of CEOs from FE, Adult Education and ITPs meeting for a programme of lectures and seminars which saw inputs from the Business School, from the DfE and from high-profile guest speakers.

Sir Frank McLoughlin, the ETF’s Associate Director of Leadership, said,

This is an immensely prestigious programme delivered by one of the world’s leading Business Schools: a serious professional programme of a kind not seen before in the sector.  Already, participants are saying that it has challenged and stretched them and we will be keeping a close eye on the impact this has on their leadership styles and their institutions.“

Many of the CEOs commented how they had been moved rapidly and skilfully out of their comfort zones and forced to think hard and creatively about their approach to their work.

One wrote,

This has impacted me strongly. This was the most helpful and impactful session of development I have had in twenty years in the sector.”

The first task for all participants was to frame an individual Leadership Challenge to address and then to work together as a group, and in smaller groups, to explore and reflect on the range of tools offered to address their own style and behaviours.

One reported,

I love the tutorial system and the capacity to work in smaller groups and think about future work and problem solving.”

Many commented on the way in which their roles were shifting from “managing the business” to working with the increasing influence and in partnership with a diverse array of external stakeholders in their localities and more widely. One aim of the programme is to develop skills in partnership working

In the three months between mid-June and the second residential delegates will work in Action Learning Sets, make use of a specially developed app and receive support from their tutors.

Two more cohorts have recruited (with a couple of spaces available) and Cohort Four is now open for applications. For further information and to book a place visit our booking system.
